Timothy Oulton has created an iconic brand, the look, styling and way about doing business is unique. This helps to set them apart in the luxury market. They celebrate being British, but have a global presence, they are a large business, but when you meet the team and visit their stores, it feels intimate and special, plus you are always offered a drink – often champagne!
Their products are authentic, they don’t copy designs, they innovate. This brand is passionate about design and the materials used and boy does it show. Go into a Timothy Oulton shop and ask about their leather, you’ll be there for a while. It’s fascinating to see so much passion for a material, this level of passion is rare.
“We have a point of view. There is character and soul to what we do. The materials we use, the link to heritage, the designs we have – that combination is unique.”
Talking about Rare, Timothy Oulton also has an antiques shop called ‘Rare’. I visited them while in Hong Kong. Antiques were what started it all off. Tim’s father had an antiques shop in Manchester, and while Tim was growing up, he spent a lot of time in the shop surrounded by antiques. When Tim left school he naturally started off in the family business and a few years later found himself at the helm, repositioning the company to focus on furniture design.
Tim realised that after being exposed to antiques for so long, they had given him an appreciation for quality, design and handcrafted pieces. These qualities helped to form the brand’s ethos.
“exposure to the antiques industry at an early age introduced me to beautiful design. Being surrounded by great handcrafted products most of my life has definitely impacted how I produce my furniture.”
I recently went to see the new Timothy Oulton collection at Harrods where last year they won the Customer Service Excellence Award, beating 329 other departments with over 5000 staff.
The Age of Elegance range was without a doubt my favourite. It’s glamorous and finished in bold materials. Marble, brass detailing and rich new leathers and fabrics form the elements of this range.
My favourite piece in the collection is the Bastille armchair, it’s wrapped in brass-studded leather and the design is so sophisticated. The brass detailing at the bottom of the chair elevates this piece into something quite special.
I do have to mention that the leather on this chair is quite special indeed. Celebrating the natural and unique characteristics of the hide. The leather is sanded by hand to raise the grain and create an almost suede like texture that you just want to run your hand over. It’s dyed by hand on both sides of the hide giving it a rich and sumptuous look. These techniques give it a lived in look which only improves over time and making it look unique. Each piece of leather is specially chosen and shaped over the chair to make the most of the hide.
To celebrate the launch of their new collection and the fact that my favourite piece in the collection is the Bastille Chair, we are giving away 1 Bastille Chair (worth £1,375) to a lucky reader and the chance to come along to the Timothy Oulton shop at Harrods, meet me and learn more about this iconic British brand.
