Defining Interior Styling, Interior Design and Interior Architecture

Defining Interior Styling, Interior Design and Interior Architecture

Interior styling, interior design, and interior architecture are three fields that are often confused with one another, but they each have distinct roles and responsibilities. The purpose of this blog post is to define each field, provide practical examples of each specialism, and highlight the differences between them.

What is Interior Styling?

Interior styling is the art of creating visually appealing spaces. This can include arranging furniture, adding decor, and selecting colours and textures to create a cohesive design scheme. Interior stylists often work on projects such as photoshoots, home staging, and events. In the UK, there are no specific licensing requirements for interior stylists.

Some practical points that may be included in an interior styling project include:

  • Arrangement of furniture and decor to create a desired aesthetic
  • Selection of colours and textiles to create a cohesive design scheme
  • Use of accessories and decor to add visual interest
  • Styling of multiple spaces within a home or commercial space

What is Interior Design?

Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. This can include selecting colours, materials, and furniture, as well as arranging layout and functionality. Interior designers often work on residential and commercial projects and may specialise in specific types of spaces such as kitchens or bathrooms. In the UK, there are no specific licensing requirements for interior designers.

Some practical points that may be included in an interior design project include:

  • Selection of furniture, lighting, and accessories that complement the overall aesthetic of the space
  • Use of colour and texture to create a cohesive design scheme
  • Space planning and layout to optimise functionality and flow
  • Selection of materials such as flooring, wall covering, and cabinetry
  • Incorporation of sustainable design practices
  • Compliance with building codes and accessibility standards

What is Interior Architecture?

Interior architecture is the design and planning of the internal structure and layout of a building. This can include the design of walls, partitions, floors, and ceilings, as well as the layout of rooms and circulation spaces. Interior architects often work on projects such as new construction and major renovations. In the UK, the use of the term “architect” is protected by law and can only be used by those who are registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB). Therefore, not all interior designers who work on architectural projects are considered “architects” in the legal sense, even if they may be referred to as such in common usage.

Some practical points that may be included in an interior architecture project include:

  • Design and layout of internal spaces to optimise functionality and flow
  • Selection of materials and finishes for walls, floors, and ceilings
  • Collaboration with architects and builders to ensure the design is structurally sound and compliant with building codes
  • Space planning and layout to optimise functionality and flow

Differences between Interior Styling, Interior Design, and Interior Architecture

The main difference between interior styling, interior design, and interior architecture is the focus of each field. Interior styling is mainly focused on aesthetics and creating visually appealing spaces, while interior design is focused on both aesthetics and functionality, as well as compliance with building codes and accessibility standards. Interior architecture is focused on the structural and functional aspects of the design of the internal spaces.

Conclusion

Interior styling, interior design, and interior architecture are all important fields that contribute to the creation of functional and beautiful spaces. By understanding the differences between these fields, you can better understand what each professional brings to a project and how they can work together to create the perfect space for you.
