Interior Design Interviews

Interior Style Hunter interviews Alice Barrington-Wells from Carter Wells, the Interior Designer Agency

11th August 2016

Where do you go if you’re looking for an interior designer? There are so many incredible designers out there that it can be quite hard to select one. Well let me tell you a little secret, Carter Wells is the place to go. Alice represents the best designers in the UK, and her business, Carter Wells, will help you to select a designer who will best suit you and your project.

I recently caught up with Alice to talk about Carter Wells, interior design and more.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you came to start Carter Wells.

I’ve worked in the interiors industry for over 12 years in a sales and marketing capacity, after qualifying from The London Institute Chelsea College of Art in 2003. It was whilst at Marston & Langinger as Head of Sales & Marketing that I recognised the need for a service to help clients find good interior designers in such a saturated market. Hiring an interior designer can be a very emotive decision and I wanted to create a personal service where the interiors industry could become more accessible to those who want to create personal and beautiful homes.

Your service is unique in this sector, could you explain how you work with a client and what the advantages are for clients coming directly to you?

We guide the client through the entire process from the initial enquiry through to the commencement of their project with their chosen designer. After that we are always available if there is anything the client needs advice on during the project. Typically, we spend a lot of time getting to know our clients, advising them on any element that they may need such as budget allocation, time frames for their project etc.

The idea of our service is to provide clients with an impartial selection of very professional designers who excel in their area and who will be able to deliver exactly what the client has asked for within the timeframe and budget required.

There is a huge amount of design firms out there, who have smart websites and glitzy photographs of past projects but don’t say enough about who they really are and why they would be right for you: this is where we come in. We help you to discover true design talent and designers who will create homes that reflect your personality.

What do you think is the biggest misconception in the industry?

Not believing that hiring a professional interior designer will avoid costly mistakes. When hiring a designer to be your one point of contact in a project they will take ownership of all the stages and make sure all details are executed perfectly with a polished and efficient result.

Common pitfalls include laying a tiled floor incorrectly, misunderstanding the space within your property and its proportions, painting a room the wrong shade and then realising that it’s too dark.

If you had one piece of advice to offer someone considering carrying out work on their house with the aid of a designer what would it be?

Really take your time to find the right designer for you who had a proven track record behind them and who shares your vision for what you are hoping to achieve.

You can contact Alice through her website Carter Wells.
